Black Friday Mania 2013

It’s that time of year again… Black Friday is upon us in all of its money-saving glory. For some, this means camping out in front of your favorite retailer or stampeding in store doors as soon as the “Open” bell sounds. For others, it means steering clear of any and all shopping locations, instead enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers in the comfort of your own home.

Whatever your Black Friday consumer-poison, retail workers have little option other than to put down the turkey and head to work. Despite heavybacklash against stores opening on Thanksgiving, many national retailers – including Old Navy, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Macy’s and more – are beginning their deals, and thus work shifts, even earlier this year.

In this chart, Mother Jones shows us how “America’s biggest retailers have competed in recent years to appeal to crazed shoppers at the expense of their employees—not to mention the one holiday where we’re supposed to contemplate being grateful for what we’ve got, rather than just coveting more stuff.” To this effect, the opportunity to create Work/Life balance is nil when increased profits trump quality family time for the holidays.

“I have to come in at 6pm on Thursday and again at 4am on Friday. I also work Saturday and my family leaves on Sunday,” Matt, employee for one of these big-box retailers, tells Jobs2Careers what his holiday plans are: work, work and more work.

However, Black Friday horror stories aren’t the only expectation for the day. For businesses, Black Friday is the “big push” that launches huge profits for the holiday season.  For employees, it can be a way to earn some much-needed cash for the upcoming holidays.
